cultivate your network

Build and nurture relationships and create pathways to achieving your goals.

1
appreciate your network

Even to people who have powerful networks, the idea of “networking” can sound intimidating—and tiring! But it doesn’t have to be.

Think about it this way: we can’t accomplish much without being connected to others. Each person you know expands your network and your opportunities.

You already have a network, and you’re already networking.

The key is to recognize that so that you can be intentional about growing and tending to your network.

2
map out your network

Who IS in your current network?

Take a moment to think about who you know and where you know people from. For example:

  • jobs and volunteer work
  • clubs, sports, activities
  • teachers—from college and before
  • friends of your family members
  • family members of your friends
  • college staff and leaders

These are your contacts—your network. And all of these people have their own networks that can help you meet your goals.

3
practice networking styles

OK, now how do you keep building your network?

Different people have different networking styles—and we each use a few different styles, too. You’ll get more out of it if you tap into your own style and recognize those of the individuals in your network.

Here are some ways you might express connections with your network:

  • follow them on social media
  • communicate with them on social media, either through DM or by commenting on their posts
  • visit professors’ office hours
  • participate in clubs, activities, or events
  • check in via text or email
  • help others realize their goals

4
keep your network healthy

Your network will be with you throughout your life. To maintain energy, keep it authentic.

Remember, your most important connection is with yourself. Keep that relationship strong with self-care like meditation and exercise, and your mind will create ideas that support your career goals.

Networks are all about mutuality. Sometimes the best approach is to focus not on how others can help you, but how you can help them.

When in doubt, reach out to organizations and individuals that align with the vision you have for your life. Ask what they’re working on that they need help with. Genuinely offer to help them, with no expectation that they owe you anything.

Enthusiasm is contagious. Have fun and enjoy the journey.
