Are you considering taking a leave of absence next term (or this term)? Taking one or more terms off can interrupt your momentum and make graduation feel farther away, so it’s often better to keep going if that feels doable.
But at the same time, people face all kinds of situations that do disrupt their studies and make taking time off the best choice—and that’s okay! The important thing is to be mindful and strategic about your decision.
Here are some things to consider:
- impact on financial aid
- your access to housing and health insurance
- in-between options, like taking a reduced courseload or classes at a community college
To discuss your options, talk to:
- EOP or other student support office
- your college advisor
- your financial aid counselor
- faculty mentor
- a Beyond 12 coach!
If you decide not to enroll next term:
- do create a revised education plan that accounts for your leave of absence. It’s a lot to think about right now, but it will help make your transition back smoother.

- don’t be hard on yourself for taking this time. You know what you need!
